Your First Visit

Smiling girl The first visit is focused on getting to know the patient and determining what, if any, orthodontic problems are present. The doctor will address as many of the following questions as possible:

  • Is there an orthodontic problem?
  • What options are available to correct the problem?
  • When should treatment begin?
  • Will removal of selected teeth be needed during treatment?
  • How long will the treatment take?
  • How much will the treatment cost?
If Treatment Is Needed
If the doctor determines that treatment is needed, another appointment will be made for diagnostic records. Records consist of one or more of the following items: study casts of the teeth, photos of the face and teeth, and special orthodontic x-rays. This information is used to obtain additional detailed information about the patient's problem and finalize the treatment plan discussed by the doctor.

Consultation
Sometimes the doctor will recommend an additional visit or phone conference to review treatment and make sure all questions about treatment have been answered.

Getting Started
After the treatment plan is finalized, appointments will be made to begin treatment by placing the appliance or braces. The initial appointment can take anywhere from 30 minutes to two hours depending on the treatment needed.
