Treatment for Adults

Adult Orthodontics

Properly planned orthodontic treatment can be successful at any age, including adulthood. In fact, we have found that adult patients are often among our very best orthodontic patients since they tend to be highly motivated toward getting the best results possible and diligent in following the doctor’s advice during treatment. With the availability of more cosmetic appliances such as clear braces, Invisalign, and other more esthetic appliances, more adults are entering treatment than ever before. In fact, today about 20-25% orthodontic patients is over 21.

There are some important differences between adult and adolescent orthodontic treatment. Since jaw growth is complete by age 21, jaw surgery is sometimes needed along with braces in order to get the best results. Also, if adults have experienced tooth loss or deterioration of the bone that surrounds the teeth, additional periodontal treatment is sometimes needed before, during, or after orthodontic treatment. Sometimes bone loss or similar problems can limit the amount of tooth movement that can be done. If these concerns apply to your treatment, the doctors will discuss them with you and coordinate treatment with your general dentist and other dental specialists.
